When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) got a hold of a Chevrolet Volt for crash testing in 2011, little did they know that a rollercoaster ride would ensue. Three days after a side impact test in May, the wrecked half-electric, half-gas-powered sedan caught fire and immediately, the lithium-ion battery took the blame. Later in the year, a full-blown investigation into the batteries took place and GM was put in a rather interesting position. They took action any way they could to fix the car’s reputation and even went as far as offering owners a loaner car until a remedy could be found. With the help of the NHTSA, the Volt gained strategically placed supports and protection to ensure a battery-caused fire would not occur. With that behind the car, it can now rest fully as the investigation has officially been closed.
“GM is proud of the technological innovation the Volt represents. We appreciate the confidence our Volt customers continued to provide during the investigation,” said General Motors in a press release. Even though the NHTSA conducted follow-up tests, they are still unaware of any real-world lithium-ion caused vehicle fires and for that reason, they have called off the investigation. Coupled with the recent enhancements to the Volt, the evaluation outfit is under the belief that there is no safety difference between a conventional car and an electric one. “ Opened on November 25, the agency’s investigation has concluded that no discernible defect trend exists and that the vehicle modifications recently developed by General Motors reduce the potential for battery intrusion resulting from side impacts,” said the NHTSA.

The Volt and its electric bothers didn’t get away scott free however. Both GM and the NHTSA urge consumers to become aware of the “specific attributes” of EVs. With the help of the National Fire Protection Association and the Department of Energy, an interim guidance has been written to instruct and identify the proper safety measures to perform in the rare occurence of battery fire. 2012 Mercedes SLK350 Review. In the past we might have compared the SLK to that cute girl next door, or perhaps even a confident woman in a short suit skirt and naughty secretary glasses. So weren’t we shocked when Mercedes unveiled the all-new 2012 SLK. To carry on the metaphor, the internal monolog most certainly sounded like this: “Whoa… it’s a dude.”
Perhaps “dude” isn’t quite the right word. The chiseled features of the SLK aren’t at all the somewhat corny romantic comedy type. Rather, they’re the square-jawed, five-o’clock shadow in a Hugo Boss suit type. Not a clear enough picture? Just think about the last cologne commercial you saw. Yea, it looks like that guy.
But handsome looks will only get you so far and on further inspection the SLK doesn’t seem to bring much to the table. Thankfully, a drive in the SLK350 reveals much more than a spec sheet can tell you.
Unlike the somewhat drastic change that BMW made with the Z4, the SLK hasn’t grown much. It’s 2-inches longer than the old car, with a minutely stretched wheelbase and an extra inch side to side. There’s little new under the hood as well. Sure, the 3.5-liter V6 has gained direct-injection, and while that makes for a more significant jump in power on other Mercs (like the C350), horsepower is only up two ponies to 302 and torque rises just 8 lb-ft for a total of 273. The result is a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds, matching the outgoing model – certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

The web is afire with news that Lexus has managed to demolish the standing production-car record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The news comes courtesy of EVO Magazine's own Chris Harris and Lexus itself via the miracle of Twitter. Lexus test driver Akira Iida reportedly managed to twist the LFA Nürburgring Edition around the infamous circuit in 7:14. If true, that time puts the carbon-fiber exotic four-seconds ahead of the previous production-car champion, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, at 7:18, and it puts the LFA Nürburgring Edition in the top five quickest vehicles to ever run the track.
Impressive.

Attempting to set a new record for running up the Goodwood hill climb in reverse, the specially adapted Nissan Leaf was not allowed to run as officials deemed it unsafe due to a lack of testing.
Naturally disappointed with the decision, Nissan promissed to return to the UK hill climb event next year. A Nissan spokes person said, "We still want to break records with the LEAF.
"The fact it can travel at speeds up to 90mph backwards is too good an opportunity not to exploit."
"Unlike petrol-powered cars, in which reverse gear allows only low speeds, the Leaf has an electric powertrain that, theoretically, enables it to be driven backwards as fast as it can go forwards." Image via Wikipedia

Surprisingly, though, Ford has kept upgrading the car with the most recent version in 2010 featuring two supercharged and three naturally aspirated engine options allowing it to compete in various sanctioning bodies including the NHRA. Since then there has been no word whether to expect yet another Cobra Jet to come down the assembly line, until now that is. According to recent information posted on MicasaFord.com, a Puerto Rican Ford dealership, the 2012 Cobra Jet is in the pipeline and will feature many new upgrades.
Reportedly the 2012 Cobra Jet will yet again be limited to just 50 units produced. It will feature a revised 430hp supercharged 5.4L engine featuring a new aluminum block, double keyed crankshaft, and Manley H-beam connecting rods. Other improvements include new Strange Engineering low drag brakes, revised rear suspension, black anodized Weld Racing wheels, and Cobra Jet branded Goodyear tires. For those wanting to race in the NHRA Super Stock class a $9,995 4.0L supercharger option is also available. While the previous Cobra Jets were only available with white or silver paint, Ford will offer the 2012 model in Race Red, Grabber Blue, and Winner White at no additional charge. Car news: TOKYO (AFP) – Japan's Nissan Motor and Chrysler of the United States have scrapped a plan to supply vehicles to each other because of the ongoing turmoil in the industry, the two companies said. Nissan had announced last year it would provide to Chrysler a compact sedan for the South American market beginning this year and a small vehicle for global markets from 2010. Chrysler, which has since partnered with Italy's Fiat as part of its bankruptcy plan, had been due to supply a pickup truck to Nissan from 2011. But the two companies decided to end the project "in light of significant changes in business conditions since the projects were announced," according to a joint statement released late on Wednesday. The move comes after Chrysler and Fiat sealed a deal in June to create a new auto giant after the Italian maker stepped in to salvage the bankrupt US firm.Fiat will at first hold 20 percent of Chrysler Group, with its equity stake rising to 35 percent and eventually to a majority stake as long as certain targets are achieved and US government funds are repaid. Nissan, Japan's third largest automaker, is 44-percent owned by France's Renault.
